  1. Korean Temple Stay Experience – Haeinsa Temple Stay

October 9, 2012 by Vallabh Rao

One of the most interesting travel experiences I have had was the temple stay at Haeinsa temple in South Korea. The Temple of Haeinsa and the “Tripitaka Koreana” Woodblocks are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

  4. Celebrating New Year’s Eve in Hong Kong at Tsim Sha Tsui welcoming 2012

January 1, 2012 by Vallabh Rao

One of the reasons I came to Hong Kong almost a week early, for attending the Mad Asia Forum was to celebrate new year’s in this city. The city does put on a great show for the new year’s eve, with new year’s countdown at many places and a fireworks show on the  skyscrapers of Honk Kong island which can be seen from the Kowloon side of the Victoria harbour.

So to experience this pyrotechnics show from the buildings in person, I went over to Tsim Tha Tsui water front with some friends.  I knew the place and the metro ride to it would be crowded but the situation was worse than I had thought. It looked like the whole of Hong Kong with its population of 7 million had descended there for the celebration.

Despite going there at around 10:30, crowds had already gathered occupying the first few rows. Some were playing games, some were chatting and some were dry humping. Every half an hour from 11PM we would get to see a “blink and miss” fireworks display which would send the crowds cheering and hooting. Then came the much anticipated countdown followed by the display. The entire show can be a bit disappointing compared to the enthusiasm and the excitement before the show starts. Once the short fireworks display was over you are once again part of the rivers of humanity that flow towards the nearby metro stations. The police probably having the busiest day of their life cordoned off some areas and were controlling the human traffic by blocking and diverting streams of people.

  5. David Pluth’s North Korea Tourism Video – Shot in 2007

December 25, 2011 by Vallabh Rao

When the death of the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il is making news everywhere, I stumbled upon this video which documents David Pluth’s travels through North Korea. The video gives a rare glimpse into this secretive, cut-off nation. The differences between North and South Korea also become apparent.

  6. Cheapest Airfare from Bangalore to Hong Kong

December 24, 2011 by Vallabh Rao

I am flying to Hong Kong on the 29th and I did some research on the airfare between Bangalore and Hong Kong. When I booked my flight the cheapest direct connection was Dragon Air which is part of Cathay Pacific. This is a direct flight with no stopovers. There was also the option was taking Kingfisher to Mumbai and then fly to Hong Kong which was cheaper than the direct Dragon Air flight but given the uncertainty about Kingfisher schedules now and the long  stopover resulting in a longer journey time made me go with Dragon Air. There is also an offer for people who fly with Dragon Air to avail discounts at various Hong Kong sightseeing and commercial establishments through a promotional offer.

Some photos of YourStory team retreat at Mangomist Resort, near Bannerghatta National Park, Bangalore. The place was nice – a nice pool , sports equipment but some parts were tacky and the food was definitely a disappointment.

  9. Visa on Arrival for Indians Experience at Bangkok Airport

December 21, 2011 by Vallabh Rao

BangkokWhat do you do if you have a layover of about half a day at Bangkok airport? You might consider getting a Thai Visa on arrival which is available for Indian nationals and go sightseeing. But the Visa on Arrival experience is not as easy as it might seem. You will have to wait with hundreds of people mostly from India and China and many other countries who can avail Visa on arrival. You watch in despair as people from other countries like EU, US and Australia get out without requiring a Visa. (more…)
